Employer Legal Obligations – Workplace First Aid in Ireland

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, Irish employers are legally required to:

  • Provide adequate first aid equipment and trained first aiders in the workplace
  • Ensure the number of trained first aiders is proportionate to the size and risk level of the workplace
  • Include first aid provisions in the company Safety Statement

Failure to comply can result in enforcement action by the HSA. Our PHECC-certified workplace first aid training ensures your business meets all regulatory requirements and keeps your team safe.

The Role of a Certified First Aid Responder

A PHECC First Aid Responder (FAR) is a trained and certified first aider who can:

  • Take charge of a medical incident and provide immediate, effective first aid until EMS arrives
  • Remain calm and act decisively in high-pressure emergency situations
  • Apply PHECC clinical guidelines for assessment, treatment, and handover to ambulance services
  • Maintain their certification through regular refresher training and CPD

First Aid Recertification – Renewing Your PHECC Certificate

Your PHECC FAR certificate is valid for 2 years. To remain a certified first aider in Ireland, you must complete an approved First Aid Refresher Course before your certificate expires. Don’t let your qualification lapse — staying certified means staying ready.
